On
March 6, 2005, the European Union's top foreign policy representative
Javier Solana asked Syria to provide a "specific timetable" for the
withdrawal of its troops from Lebanon "as soon as possible".
In a statement, Solana said the EU still expected that UN Security
Council resolution 1559 on withdrawing the soldiers be fully
implemented:
- "This implies a complete withdrawal from Lebanon of all military
forces and foreign secret services,".
- "I call on the Syrian and Lebanese authorities to establish a specific
timetable and a mechanism of withdrawal as soon as possible,"
reiterating the EU's support for a free, democratic and sovereign
Lebanon.
