On May 28, the Daily Star reported that the Lebanese authorities are planning to shut down NTV, New Television, because it regularly broadcasts
shows which criticize the Saudi Arabian government.
These tactics, which are consistent with past actions of TV station shutdowns such as MTV
in 2002, challenge the foundation of democracy and the citizens’ basic rights for
information.
Additionally, we cannot expect civil society to be empowered when the media becomes censored and personal scores between political rivals, are settled publicly outside the rule of
law.
RCPL urges the Canadian authorities to request a rapporteur to visit Lebanon and report on its freedom of expression abuses.
